Collections are never neutral. To select is also to construct a story, even when no one says that story out loud.

Created especially for the exhibition Museum of the Future – 17 Digital Experiments, Dueto, Contraponto, Paralaxe (Duet, Counterpoint, Parallax) is a video work that looks at the narratives built around the relationship between Swiss and Brazilian design. The piece brings together material from the collection of the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and the Wanda Svevo Archive at the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, and crosses them with Google image searches made from Switzerland and from Brazil.

As much as it compares Swiss and Brazilian points of view, the work is also about the gap between institutional narratives and popular ones — the stories, assumptions and repeated myths that circulate more freely. It touches on questions like what is said about the presence of Unidade Tripartida at the Biennial, Max Bill’s relationship with Alexandre Wollner, Almir Mavignier and Mary Vieira, his Brazilian students at Ulm, and the influence of these designers in both Europe and Brazil.
