Orquestra Vermelha is formed by me and a band of shadows of musicians who are not physically on stage. In its original form, four LED screens show life-size silhouettes of the band members, as if they were there. In front of a fifth screen, playing and controlling the system, I become a shadow too.

The musicians were recorded in the studio, improvising on top of sketches and very simple musical structures. Each recording was then edited and passed on to the next player, until the repertoire emerged from a process that was neither quite improvisation nor quite composition.

Years later, that same material became an album, as another version of the project, and a very different one from the live performance. From 2023 onward, on its tenth anniversary, Orquestra started to take on a hybrid form, with musicians on stage performing alongside the shadows of other musicians, and of themselves.
